Throw Blankie by Bebe au Lait

My daugther recently got her very first blankie, by Bebe au Lait. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly soft it is.  The fleecy fabric is softer than any of my son’s blankets ever were/are, and the satin trim is so silky smooth. I am amazed at how good it feels to touch! I’ve washed the blankie a few times and it hasn’t lost any of its softness. The blankie is the perfect size for games of peekaboo and to cover her up for daytime naps. She loves to grab it and swing it around with her arms. The blankie comes attached to a cute little pouch that the blanket can be tucked into. Then you have a little ball to toss around and play with. I like the pouch for travel purposes- it keeps the blankie clean in transit. I can already tell that this little throw blankie is going to be her comfort item in the years ahead. It’s the perfect snuggle mate!

Gunapod Sleep Sack- Wearable Blanket

When my baby outgrew her first swaddling sleep sacks, we were ready to enter the wide world of the wearable blanket. We tried the gunapod Wearable Blanket and are so happy we did!

What I really like about the gunapod Wearable Blanket are the different zipper options, which add so much flexibility in terms of how your baby likes to get into and out of the sack. We mostly use the traditional front zipper up the middle, as this seems to be the easiest way to use the sack, but the other options do come in handy on occasion. During one attempted nap where my daughter was crying more than usual, I was able to use the zipper around the bottom and sides to open the sack and take a peak at her diaper. Another time when it seemed she was over-heating, I unzipped the bottom and opened the blanket to allow some cooler air in without having to take her completely out of the sack. Unfortunately, while the zipper around the bottom is very flexible, it’s harder to use because it gets caught on itself, so it often takes a few back and forth attempts to get that zipper closed all the way. I’ve occasionally had the same sticking issue on the front zipper, but it seems to close easier most of the time.

The snaps that secure the top near her shoulders are one of the most convenient and helpful options. As opposed to the small arm holes in other sleep sacks that required me to bend my baby’s arm in awkward directions in order to slide her arms in and out, these top shoulder snaps allow me to assemble the sack around her shoulders while she lies with her arms in a natural position. Especially at the end of a long day, when my daughter is really tired and ready for sleep, this is a solution that adds a lot of peace to the bedtime process.  And in the morning, when I go into her room and lift her out of her crib, I just unsnap the shoulders and open the front, leaving the blanket behind in the crib. This allows me to pick up and hug my daughter and move on to the next activity (diaper change, feeding) without having to then get her out of her sleep sack.

The blanket material is incredibly soft, and a little thinner than your average fleece, so I feel it keeps her body warm without overheating. It’s winter here in California, so we wear fleece footy pajamas underneath it, and that seems to be the perfect combination. After machine-washing the gunapod Wearable Blanket, the material seems equally soft, and hasn’t pilled up. I do recommend washing it separately the first time you wash it, as it seemed to have shed some of its white fuzziness in the dryer onto some of my darker items (You’d think I would have learned by now, not to mix light and dark loads like that!)

Overall, if you like using sleep sacks, you won’t be disappointed by the gunapod Wearable Blanket, as it’s super soft material, flexible zippering options and roomy fit make it one of our bedtime favorites!

Simple Wishes Pumping Bra

Simple Wishes (3 stars out of 5)

I have been using Medela Freestyle breast pump with its hands free straps. I liked using Simple Wishes nursing bra because it was just “simple” without dealing with all the straps and clips in addition to the breast pump, which was already complex enough. I also liked the support from its corset like design wrapping around my trunk while pumping. The Velcro system made it easy to adjust the size. The material was tight enough for work and also soft to skin.

The openings with double flaps worked fine with the breast shields. I inserted the breast shield from inside and found it helps setting up breast pump more easily by placing the shields firmly on my breast without my holding them.

Although I liked the corset like design, it is not structured as a real corset. The front zipper keeps it from having a smooth line at front, which does not allow me to wear it as a normal underwear. I carried it in my breast pump bag and used it only during pumping.

Pros.
Simple, hands-free, good support, easily adjustable

Cons.
Not to be worn as underwear.

Belle Baby Carrier

My husband and I are big fans of baby carriers.  However, as our baby has grown into an active and curious 20+ pound 11-month old, we’ve become more desperate in our pursuit of a comfortable carrier that doesn’t constrain our daughter.  When the Belle Baby Carrier arrived in a compact box, we were skeptical.  Unlike a lot of carriers, Belle is made with relatively minimal materials.  How could it possibly provide enough support?  Surprisingly, it does and it has much more going for it!

As a test, I strapped my daughter on for a family trip to the Farmer’s market.  Here’s how it did.

Pros:

  • After an hour-long trip walking up and down hills, I felt great.  Shoulders and back were ache-free.  Even without a lot of padding, the waist straps did a great job distributing my child’s weight across my hips.
  • The carrier keeps baby close to the body, and the minimal material helps the carrier feel like a second skin.  Without the bulk, maneuvering through the market crowds was a breeze, and less material helped me stay cool with fewer of those gross sweaty spots that sometimes show up under more padded carrier straps.
  • The cut of the carrier is just right, allowing my baby to freely turn her head and reach out without having the material cut into her neck, arms or legs.  With easy access to her mouth, I was able to feed my daughter plenty of fresh fruit samples.  And, because the material doesn’t come right up to her head like some other carriers, I didn’t end up with a big drool spot right in the front of the carrier.
  • With less bulk, the carrier can be packed very compactly.  This is the only carrier that I’ve been able to roll up and tuck into a bag with other items.  So great since having a kid usually mean travelling with a ton of stuff.  The less you have to carry, the better.
  • The crossover strap design is brilliant.  No awkward pulling of the carrier over your head or reaching behind you to fasten buckles.  Simply put on the waist belt, hold your baby in front of you, pull the carrier up over the baby, throw the straps over your shoulders so that they cross in back of you and grab the ends to snap into place at your waist.  So simple.
  • Two positions allow you to accommodate both a young infant who needs to face inward and an older child who wants to face outward (the carrier can hold babies from 8 to 35 pounds and includes a detachable head support for inward facing infants).  Although my child is older and generally prefers to face outward, I did put her facing inward when she was getting tired, and she feel asleep within minutes.  Makes me think this carrier is pretty comfortable for her as well!
  • The material used for the carrier is both fashionable and organic.  I have the Organic Jubilee model which is a stylish black and white design on organic cotton and hemp with a dye-free fleece liner.  Look good and feel good about having the carrier so close to your baby’s skin.

Cons:

  • While most of the carrier is very comfortable, the waist strap connects with two stainless steel rings that happen to sit right on my hip bone.  Heavy baby combined with somewhat bony hips makes for a little bit of a sore spot.  It’s not horrible, but I did notice it.
  • The stainless steel rings make attaching the waist belt a little more complicated than other carriers that utilize a buckle.  However, it’s just a minor inconvenience and does feel like it might be more secure and more durable than a plastic buckle.

Overall, this is a great baby carrier.  It looks great, feels great, and packs up better than anything else I’ve seen on the market.  Don’t be fooled by its relatively lightweight and clean design.  Apparently, you don’t need all the padding and buckles to make a really durable and supportive carrier.  This one absolutely does the trick!

The First Years True Fit Premier Convertible Car Seat

Our baby girl is quickly getting taller and heavier, so when it came time to get a car seat to put in her grandma’s car we had to make sure it met some key criteria.  To make life easier for grandma, this car seat had to be easy to lift our daughter into and out of and had to be easy to adjust to keep up with her rapidly changing dimensions.  Also, to satisfy a doting grandma, something extra plush and comfortable would be the icing on the cake!  The First Years True Fit Premier Convertible Car Seat met all these needs and more.

Pros:

  • This is a big, open car seat that makes it really easy to navigate your child into place.  With no need to contort your or your child’s body to wrangle her into the seat, your back will be very happy.
  • The height of the harness straps can be adjusted simply by pulling levers on either side of the car seat and sliding them up and down.  You never have to undo the straps and pull them through the car seat to accommodate your growing child.  If you’ve ever had to do this with another model, you know what a relief this is!  In addition, you can adjust the position of the connecting belt that sits between your child’s legs to really get the right fit.
  • The seat pad is removable and washable, which is great for cleaning off food stains and spit-up, as well as any other accidents.  However, do note that the manual recommends hand washing the pad, so it’s not quite as easy as throwing it in the washing machine.
  • This seat is amazingly comfortable, especially with the highly padded headrest in place.  Before we installed the seat in grandma’s car, we had it on the floor in our living room, and our daughter loved sitting in it. Watching her made my husband and I wish they made the seat in adult size!
  • As a convertible car seat, this should be the only seat my daughter ever needs.  According to the manual, it can safely accommodate children weighing 5 to 65 pounds.  For infants, there is an insert that provides extra padding for a more snug fit. If you’re looking to buy only one car seat, this could be it.
  • Installation is relatively easy – at least as easy as car seat installations go.  We’ve only installed it in rear-facing mode but imagine front facing isn’t much harder.  If you choose, you can install using the LATCH system.
  • This car seat is safe.  We went to AAA for an inspection to make sure we installed it correctly, and the inspector assured us that there had never been a recall on this model.  In addition, this model has a 5-point harness and a flip-up rebound bar for rear-facing mode as extra safety features.  As a parent, that’s always very welcome news!

Cons:

  • In the installation process, buttoning the fabric cover back down over the seat base is fairly clumsy since it butts right up against the backseat of the car when in the rear-facing position.  You have to have really strong and nimble fingers to get the snaps securely in place.
  • Because of the tight fit between the rear-facing car seat and the backseat of the car, it’s hard to adjust the harness straps by pulling the strap that protrudes from the foot of the car seat.  You can do it, but it’s not without effort.
  • The car seat is on the large side.  With the headrest in place, it takes up the entire space between the back seat and the back of the front seat.  Luckily, grandma is pretty petite.  Otherwise, she might have had to sacrifice front seat legroom for the sake of the car seat.

All in all, this is a top car seat.  It’s safe, it grows easily with your child and it is the most comfortable looking car seat I have ever seen.  A great car seat and possibly the only one you’ll ever need!

Review: Cybex Aton Carseat

Cybex is a German baby gear company that manufactures a sleek car seat called the Aton. I love all of the safety features and the easy to install base. Plus it’s great that there is absolutely nothing cutesy about this baby gear!

Aton carseat

Pros:

  • The Aton is lightweight and easy to carry. The handle bar has 3 positions, for carrying, storing, and resting.  I love the resting mode for when we are at home because it keeps my toddler from rocking the car seat and sleeping baby too roughly.
  • The car seat is deep so my baby is well protected. Everything is nicely padded, including the sides and the straps. There’s a newborn inlay for the bottom and an infant insert for the head and shoulders. I am still using the infant insert at 5 months and it keeps my daughter’s head and upper body nice and secure in her car seat. I also tuck the shoulder strap padding in a little so that the chest buckle can rest higher on my daughter.
  • The base is easy to install and the car seat snaps in and out with ease. My husband likes the proprietary belt tensioning mechanism that works when installing using the latch connectors or seat belt. You simply press down and the lever clicks into place resulting in a snug and secure installation every time. It is also easy to use without a base, in case you need to take the baby in someone else’s car.
  • When my daughter spit up ALL over her car seat, it was very easy to wash and clean. The seat cover is on snug but it was easy to remove and to reassemble. The seat belt is also very easy to adjust to the correct level.
  • The sunshield is made of this nice black mesh fabric that blocks the sun but is breathable to let air through. The sunshield also “disappears” when not in use, making it less tempting for my toddler to play with and potentially damage.
  • The Aton won awards in Germany and is a popular car seat in Europe. You’ve got to love German engineering! The only reason we are just hearing about Cybex now is that they are breaking into the US market.

Cons:

  • The Aton does not fit in our Kolcraft Universal Infant Carseat Carrier (stroller similar to a Snap N’ Go or Car Seat Stroller Frame). Unless I purchase the Cybex Callisto stroller, there is no way I can keep my baby in the Aton car seat and go for a leisurely walk or on errands. I did not try the Aton on other infant car seat/ stroller adapters (like the one for the BOB) but I’m guessing the base of the Aton would be too large for any car seat adapter. When I looked into purchasing  the Callisto stroller, I found it was close to $350. I guess if you figure it’s the only stroller you need from birth on up, the cost seems more reasonable.
  • The cost of purchasing a second base is pricey (about $100 for the base alone). My husband and I both drive our baby around in our cars equally so we have to factor this cost into the total cost of the car seat. If you don’t need a second base, then the price of the Aton is comparable to the other car seats out there.

If safety is a priority, I would recommend the Cybex Aton as a smart way to drive around with your infant. It’s a great car seat with an easy to use, safe base attachment that will give you peace of mind on the road. However I would highly recommend buying the Cybex Callisto stroller in addition to the car seat to make it into a travel system.

Cybex Onyx City Stroller

My husband and I were sick of scraping the sides of our regular stroller trying to squeeze through crowded stores, into elevators or, even worse, sitting with the enormous carseat attachment wedged between us in cramped restaurants in the city, so we decided it was time for an umbrella stroller. We went with the Cybex Onyx and it has been a wonderful addition! We were reluctant to get yet another stroller (we have an Orbit and a BOB) because we don't have much storage space, but the Cybex more than earns its little sliver of the garage.

The stroller is wonderfully compact and so much easier to maneuver in small restaurants and stores in the city. Despite its size, it is surprisingly sturdy and provides a smooth, comfortable ride on uneven city pavement. The open/close mechanism is a cinch and can be done while holding a babe on your hip. The sun hood is huge and provides pretty complete coverage for our five month old, although as she grows bigger her feet and legs will need to be covered in a light blanket.

Pros:
Compact and comfortable - given the limited amount of storage space we have in our garage we were reluctant to add another stroller to our collection. The Cybex breaks down to an incredibly compact long rectangle which takes up very little room, especially when you stand it vertically. Despite its small size, it feels as sturdy as our other much bigger strollers out and about in the city. In fact, I think our daughter may be more comfortable in it because of the thick and comfy padded seat cushion and the variable recline settings. She sleeps easily in it but is also happy to face forward and see the world go by when she's awake.
Stable on uneven city pavement - my husband and I were skeptical that the small wheels would be able to handle the uneven paving on the sidewalks in our neighborhood. We were pleasantly surprised at how much stability the eight wheels give the stroller - our little one often drifts off to sleep while we're out and about and has never been awakened by a big bump.
Great sun protection - the hood provides great sun protection! Our little one is only five months now so pulling the hood down fully protects all of her; a great feature because it's too early to use sunscreen and nice not to have to worry about her arms and legs getting too much sun. There is a little clear plastic opening in the hood that allows you to peek in and see if the baby's sleeping, but it's easy to cover with a burp cloth or something similar to block out the sun it lets in.
Longevity - the stroller's weight limit is 55 pounds, so I'm sure our baby will outgrow strollering before she outgrows the Onyx.

Cons:
Five point harness - I think this will only be a temporary issue and one that our daughter will outgrow soon, but the harness doesn't always keep her upright and in place when she drifts off to sleep. She sometimes ends up slumped to the side against the back bars which leaves her with red marks on her face after a long nap. It's not a huge problem and only happens some of the time but it's not an issue in a stroller with a more snug seat, like the Orbit. Despite this, she does seem to be more comfortable with more room to spread out her arms so it's a trade off I'm willing to make for now.
Hood fastener - the mechanism for fastening the hood in place is two pieces of velcro which attach to another piece of fabric behind the handles. These are not strong enough to keep the big hood stable on windy days. I love the size of the hood for the sun protection it gives but I wish they had come up with a better way to keep it stable when the wind picks up.

Madii & Dyl Sooki Babe Pillow

Madii&Dyl Sooki Babe Pillow

My 3 month old got really sick with a cold virus and spent every sleeping moment, day and night, in my big bed.  I had just gotten the Madii & Dyl Sooki Babe Pillow and decided to test it out on her and it was perfect in making her more comfortable and helping her sleep soundly.

The doctor recommended elevating her head to keep the nasal drip from bothering her so she could breathe better and the Sooki Babe Pillow did the trick, safely. There is a contoured spot for her head to rest and the pillow raised her just enough so that she could lie comfortably. And since the pillow is made of all natural materials that are breathable and prevent moisture and heat build-up, it worked to keep her cool despite her fever.

Now that baby is feeling better, she continues to use the Sooki Babe Pillow for naps in my bed and play time on her activity mat. We live in a house that is carpeted and we have 2 dogs, so I appreciate that Madii & Dyl pillows are hypoallergenic and naturally resistant to dust mites, mildew and bacteria. If she spits up, it's super easy to take the cotton pillowcase off and throw it in the wash. Much easier than always having to wash the entire activity mat! The pillow would be great in a house with hardwood floors as well; it provides great cushioning for a little baby that is lying around all day long. The Sooki Babe Pillow isn't a necessity as much as a luxury but it has made my baby girl more comfortable.

Review: Kokopax Samantha Diaper Tote

For any occasion, I carry my Samantha Diaper Tote when we go out. The tote is just so stylish - more stylish than some of my regular bags. I like my "Flutter" pattern but the truth is that I had a hard time choosing only one out of all the gorgeous patterns.

What I like best about the Kokopax bag is that, though it's filled with baby stuff, it doesnt't make me feel like I am carrying a "diaper bag." The tote is roomy enough to hold a lot of things, but maybe a tad too roomy at times. The main compartment is usually an unorganized black hole where everything just gets tossed.

The tote can hold a lot of things but I found myself wanting a better way to organize the large, main compartment, especially since it has unstructured soft sides. The side pockets and the zipper pocket do an okay job as a substitute for my regular pruse in a pinch, but I do wish the Kokopax, as much as I love it, had a few more pockets to help me stay organized.

Pros:

I love the styling.  There is nothing "diaper" about it.  It's light and soft.

Cons:

I like it so much, I wish I could use it to sub for my purse, but it's hard to organize things within it due to its soft structure and lack of inside compartments and exterior pockets.

I like the tote for its style but I sometimes feel frustrated when I have to dig in a mess to look for something urgently for my baby. I recommend this tote only when you carry only a few items.

Review: The Devyn Bag

Devyn Bag

This is a great bag for travel, but a bit too big for daily use for someone small like me.  I used the Devyn Bag for my baby's first trip out of the city for a conference. I was a bit nervous about how well the storage pocket would keep our "liquid gold," frozen expressed milk. But to my surprise and relief, the milk and the icepack were still frozen hard when I opened the bag at the hotel after a four hour trip.

The Devyn bag is has many pockets to keep things organized including a well padded laptop compartment.  Each compartment serves its specialized function very well. The many pockets in insulated and purse compartments are very useful. They help keep things organized and decipherable between my things and my baby's. The Devyn Bag even has a small outside pocket on the side for miscellaneous items.  Nice styling in a variety of colors makes it a good option for a travel bag.

Although I enjoyed its generous storage space, the size is too big for my everyday commute.  I do, however, recommend this bag for travel. It can work to substitute a few bags including mom's purse, work/laptop bag, and a diaper bag.
