How to let your husband know what you really want this Valentine's Day
Submitted on Fri, 02/03/2012 - 12:25When you're in your second trimester and are barely able to fit your swelling feet into your favorite pair of shoes, going to a fancy restaurant for Valentine's Day may be the last thing you want to do. If you're worried that your husband might not know about how you envision celebrating the holiday of love, don't force him to figure out what you want on his own! Telling him exactly what you want to do is a fail-safe way to end up with the evening you've been dreaming of, but if you'd rather leave a few obvious tips, consider the following advice.
You want to relax. Perhaps getting ready for your baby's arrival has left you a bit run down emotionally and physically. By regularly mentioning that you need some time to take a break, he'll likely get the hint that you're in the mood for a calm Valentine's Day evening. Let him know that you'd love to have him cook for you, so the two of you can dine at home and spend some intimate time together.
You want to be pampered. All of the aches and pains of pregnancy may have you in the mood for a little TLC. Let your husband know how much you love it when he rubs your feet or gives you a massage. You might even want to suggest that the most romantic thing you can think of is an evening spent pampering each other.
You want to be desired. Your growing baby bump may have you feeling a little self-conscious about your figure, even if your partner is always telling you how beautiful you look. If you tell him that you've been having a hard time connecting to your sexier side while expecting, he'll be sure to remind you of how attractive you are this V-day.

Top 3 Valentine's Day date night ideas to keep the romance alive during a pregnancy
Submitted on Tue, 01/31/2012 - 13:01With a bun in the oven that will arrive in a few months, opportunities to spend time alone with your partner may soon be few and far between. Take advantage of this Valentine's Day and plan a romantic evening that will give the two of you the chance to strengthen your bond and enjoy some quality time together.
Dinner and a movie. This classic date night activity almost never disappoints. Instead of squeezing into the tight rows of the local movie theater, you may want to rent the latest blockbuster or your favorite flick and curl up with your main squeeze at home. Depending on your preference, you can splurge for reservations at a five star restaurant or order in so you can focus on cultivating an intimate and comfortable atmosphere.
Get physical. Just because you're pregnant doesn't mean that you can't get up and moving. If you and your partner love the outdoors, you can take a hike along a picturesque trail or heat up the competitive spark with a game of pool or a trip to the bowling alley. Engaging in a heart-pumping activity can get those endorphins rolling, and all of that energy may spill over into the bedroom, making for a festive V-day evening.
A beach vacation. Few things are as relaxing as reclining along the sandy shores of the beach. Encourage your partner to take a day off from work and travel to your favorite ocean-side locale. Traveling with a newborn is more laborious than it is fun, so you may want to take advantage of this time to kick back and relax. Consider looking for a resort with a spa so you can indulge in his and hers massages, which will be sure to loosen you up for a playful romp afterward!

Is it possible to maintain good oral health while expecting?
Is it possible to maintain good oral health while expecting?
Submitted on Mon, 01/30/2012 - 15:38Now that you're pregnant, you may be wondering if routine dental procedures such as X-rays and a cleaning are safe. You can set your anxieties aside because you should continue to visit your dentist every six months for a regular exam - maintaining your oral health is good for both you and your baby!
Some experts believe that a trip to the dentist is most ideal between the 14th and the 20th week of pregnancy - after you reach the third trimester, it may be uncomfortable to lean back in the exam chair for a long time.
Your changing hormone levels can cause your gums to swell, bleed and become sore, which usually starts to happen during the second trimester (another reason for the suggested range of weeks to visit the dentist). This can increase the frequency that food gets trapped between your gums, which can lead to infection without proper care. Gum disease is among the risk factors for preterm birth, so you'll want to stick to your regular dental exam schedule so a professional hygienist can help keep your mouth healthy.
You generally will only need an X-ray if you're experiencing a dental emergency, otherwise, you can postpone this step until after you give birth. Although they may not cause any harm to your baby, you may want to wait until after birth for cosmetic procedures simply to reduce any potential risks.
Eating a balanced diet will improve your dental health and help your baby to develop strong teeth as well. Make sure you are getting the recommended amounts of phosphorous, vitamins A, C and D, calcium and protein.

No amount of alcohol during pregnancy is safe, study says
No amount of alcohol during pregnancy is safe, study says
Submitted on Mon, 01/30/2012 - 13:35After alcohol was discovered to have an adverse impact on fetuses in the 1970s, expectant mothers across the U.S. withheld from drinking until they delivered. However, in recent years, some studies have emerged claiming that consuming alcohol in moderation won't hurt an unborn child - in fact, a few researchers went so far as to say that it could even be helpful.
However, a recent study published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research urges that pregnant moms shouldn't indulge in any libations, no matter how small the glass.
"We found that there is no safe amount of alcohol to drink during pregnancy," lead author Haruna Sawada Feldman, a postdoctoral student at the University of California, San Diego, told The Wall Street Journal.
Many people have been skeptical of this claim, and friends and family may even encourage a mom-to-be to have a glass every now and then under the assumption that it won't hurt the baby. Furthermore, the media has often covered the high rates of expectant moms in Europe who drink.
In 2009, the San Francisco Chronicle noted that 55 percent of British women, 52 percent of French women and 66 percent of Irish women admitted to drinking while pregnant (for comparison, only 12 percent of American women made this claim). Nonetheless, some experts have reported that a larger number of Europeans are adopting an alcohol abstinence approach that is similar to the one the U.S. has been promoting for decades.
So what does this all mean? This newest study found that some women who only drank once a week had babies with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), while some who drank more frequently had children with no defects. The researchers concluded that the key difference may be genetic as opposed to the level of exposure. And since we cannot tell if a baby is predisposed to being able to tolerate alcohol, study authors maintain that it may be safer to avoid it altogether.
If you have any questions on what this new study means for you, ask your OB/GYN.

Which celebrity mom went down a waterslide while expecting?
Submitted on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 10:27Would you go watersliding when your due date was just a few months away? Elsa Pataky recently stirred up a flurry of commentary as photos of her doing just that during her vacation in St. Barts circulated online. You might not see much wrong with an innocent trip down this inflatable water toy, but her mother and husband, Chris Helmsworth, have had to pull the reins on some of her more precarious ideas.
In an interview with Hello! Magazine, the Spanish beauty shares, "I'm pregnant and I say, 'But I can't go surfing? Are you sure I can't go horseriding or on the motorbike?' I've always been like that. I like risk." Thankfully there's someone around to help her slow down a bit, at least until the baby arrives.
Helmsworth, a rising star thanks to his role in Thor, and Pataky, who starred in Fast Five, married in December 2010 and this will be their first child together. Even though pregnancy hasn't impelled Pataky to change up her daring lifestyle, it has affected her eating habits. The starlet admitted that she's been craving sweets, hamburgers, French fries and popcorn - foods she would rarely even consider before.
The baby is due in the spring, giving the father-to-be just enough time to brush up on his Spanish skills. Pataky let him know ahead of time that she plans to speak only in her native tongue with the child. That's not to say he doesn't have a long list of other responsibilities to take care of. The actor is among the cast of the soon-to-be released Snow White and the Huntsman and his character Thor will be included in the epic hero film The Avengers.

Which former Disney star is recording an album while pregnant?
Submitted on Thu, 01/26/2012 - 15:43After launching into stardom as the teen star of the Disney hit show Lizzie McGuire, Hilary Duff has grown up, settled down, married and is now expecting her first child. Duff and her husband, hockey star Mike Comrie, will welcome home a newborn sometime in March, US Magazine reports.
In the meantime, 24-year-old Duff has been in the music studio with producer Matt Squire, who tweeted after a day of recording, "Such an amazing session with @HilaryDuff yesterday!! Xcited!!!!!"
In an interview with Celebuzz, Duff noted that before she was pregnant, she wanted to spend time working on independent films, like Bloodworth, to branch out of the mainstream. But before she gives birth, she wants hit up the recording studio and work on a new album.
"I really miss being on tour, recording and creating new music. I think that's a big dream of mine, to do that," Duff told the news source.
Duff and 31-year-old Comrie announced that they were expecting on their first anniversary via Hilary's official website. The couple have shared their excitement online, including a special holiday-themed photo. Duff displayed her baby bump, which was decorated with a Christmas greeting drawn by her older sister Haylie.
Did the happy couple decide to stay mum on the gender of their baby? Not this time around. Duff announced on Ellen that she is carrying a little baby boy and shared that she had a sense early on that she was having a son.
The expectant mom tweets regularly about the baby on the way and her anticipation for his arrival is evident. She recently shared, "ugh... can't sleep..... #officiallybabyspersonaltrampoline!!!!" In a few months, she won't feel him kicking, but a good night's sleep may not be on the horizon any time soon.

Can pregnancy affect your memory?
Can pregnancy affect your memory?
Submitted on Wed, 01/25/2012 - 13:44The large number of expectant moms who regularly forget things like where they parked their car or what they ate for breakfast has led to a host of terms (such as pregnancy brain and momnesia) categorizing the forgetfulness experienced during gestation. Have you had a hard time remembering lately? Here is the science behind this phenomenon and what you can do to stop it from affecting your day-to-day life.
The science behind pregnancy brain
In 2010, the Australian National University in Canberra published a study in The British Journal of Psychiatry that found no structural changes in the brain of expectant moms. However, in an interview with WebMD, lead researcher Helen Christensen acknowledged that pregnant women do experience high rates of forgetfulness.
While their brains are still capable of remembering, the emotional anxiety and sleeplessness that often occurs throughout pregnancy can affect memory. Furthermore, pregnant women have high levels of estrogen and progesterone, which are known to affect the nervous system.
"These hormones [estrogen and progesterone] affect all kinds of neurons in the brain," Louann Brizendine, director of the Women's Mood and Hormone Clinic at the University of California, San Francisco told the source. "You only have so many shelves in your brain so the top three are filled with baby stuff."
Tips to boost your memory
You can use your forgetfulness as an indicator that you need to simplify your life before your baby arrives. Once a newborn joins your family, your schedule is going to become much more complicated and hectic. You can develop organization habits now that will help you later on.
Start writing things down. Keep a notebook nearby where you can list all of your responsibilities for the day and check them off after you complete them. Also, try to get as much sleep as you can, which is admittedly difficult for parents. Nonetheless, adequate rest is a large component of minimizing forgetfulness.

The top foods to avoid during pregnancy
The top foods to avoid during pregnancy
Submitted on Wed, 01/25/2012 - 13:44If you're an expectant mom, you likely know two of the main things to avoid while pregnant - cigarettes and alcohol. However, in addition to these substances, there are numerous other foods to avoid that could pose a risk to your baby, as well as foods that you should eat sparingly.
Mercury
This potentially toxic compound can be found in certain varieties of seafood, including swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish, and can cause developmental damage in a growing fetus. Canned tuna generally has less mercury than other versions of this fish, but it should only be eaten in moderation (the FDA suggests no more than 12 ounces a week). Some seafood that is actually beneficial includes fully cooked tilapia, shrimp, crab and salmon.
Raw and undercooked food
As much as you may love sushi or medium-rare beef, you should avoid these delicacies while you're pregnant. Be even more cautious of raw shellfish like oysters and clams. If you're baking and are tempted to eat raw cookie dough or cake batter, wait to have a taste until after they're cooked. Raw sprouts, such as radish, clover and alfalfa, may have Listeria, so cook those thoroughly too.
Unpasteurized food
Many soft cheeses contain unpasteurized milk, including Brie, feta, blue cheese, Camembert and Mexican-style cheeses like queso blanco. Avoid unpasteurized eggs and juice as well. However, low-fat dairy offers many health benefits, so try to work skim milk, cottage cheese and mozzarella cheese into your diet.
Food to be careful with
When eating fruits and vegetables, always wash them thoroughly to remove any harmful bacteria. Limit your caffeine intake as well because high levels could speed up your baby's heart rate. Try not to drink more than 16 ounces of coffee a day. Hot dogs and deli meats must be cooked before you eat them, even if the package says otherwise, in order to kill off any lingering bacteria.

Is it a boy or a girl? Some old wives' tales that may predict the outcome - Part II
Submitted on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 13:04Even if you decide to let the ultrasound technician tell you the gender of your baby, you may have to endure up to five months of suspense as you wait for the image to reveal the sex. Thankfully, you and your partner can use secret methods of determining whether you'll have a son or daughter. Most of these tests are generally considered to be old wives' tales and have no strong scientific evidence behind them. However, folklore has to originate somewhere, and you just may make an accurate prediction!
1. Morning sickness. If you experience morning sickness all day long, you may be carrying a girl. Although moms who give birth to boys sometimes have rough bouts of nausea, there may be a bit of scientific truth to this superstition. Research has shown that women who endure hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness, tend to have girls.
2. Heart rate. The word on the street is that a fast heart rate indicates a girl, while a low heart rate indicates a boy. You'll be able to see the heartbeat on the ultrasound around 6 weeks, but it may not be loud enough for you to hear until around 12 weeks.
3. Blemishes. If you deal with acne breakouts throughout your pregnancy, you may be having a girl. Similarly, if you have a fuller face, a daughter may be on the way. Some believe that little girls steal their mother's beauty while they're in the womb.
4. Lunar calendar. Several people turn to Chinese birth charts to guess the gender of their babies. This system uses the lunar calendar and evaluates the mother's age and the month of conception to make a prediction.

Top 3 best pregnant moms played in a movie
Top 3 best pregnant moms played in a movie
Submitted on Wed, 01/18/2012 - 12:38During a pregnancy, many moms-to-be have to handle new and sometimes intimidating challenges, from taking steps to ensure the health of their child to saving up money to cover expenses. Many believe that becoming a mother also signals the beginning of a new level of strength. Hollywood has produced several memorable characters who have stepped up to the plate while expecting without letting fear slow them down. Here are a few of the most memorable on-screen moms.
Sarah Connor - Being hunted down by a robot from the future is terrifying. Realizing that the baby you're carrying is the key to the survival of the human race is even more overwhelming. Sarah Connor, the formidable heroine in Terminator, manages to outwit the machine who is terrorizing her and essentially ends up saving the world when she gives birth to her son, John.
Marge Gunderson - Thanks to Fargo, the Coen brothers redefined the potential uses of a woodcutter. In the midst of this dark film filled with several scenes of cruel brutality is Marge Gunderson, a refreshingly honest and good woman, who manages to hunt down the criminals while carrying an extra load of her own. When she discovers the horrific murders, she chastises the culprits, "There's more to life than a little money, you know. Don'tcha know that?"
After putting the killers behind bars, the film closes with Norm Gunderson rubbing his wife's belly, saying "Two more months."
Arnold Schwarzenneger - Junior presents one of the most extraordinary portrayals of child bearing. In a surprising role, Schwarzenneger plays a scientist who becomes a pregnant father as part of an experimental fertility drug trial. The image of the former Mr. Universe with a baby bump is priceless in itself.

Secret tricks to reduce swelling during pregnancy
Secret tricks to reduce swelling during pregnancy
Submitted on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 14:24Swelling generally starts to occur around the fifth month of pregnancy and increases during the third trimester. Approximately 25 percent of an expectant mom's weight gain consists of fluid. This spike is attributed to a larger blood volume, which facilitates the transfer of nutrients and waste between mother and child, as well as body fluids that help the body expand to accommodate the baby.
If you're tired of barely being able to fit into your shoes or can't stand the sight of your enlarged ankles and feet, there are some secret tips to help reduce the level of fluid retention. Although swelling will occur as a necessary side effect of pregnancy, you can prevent it from becoming a massive discomfort by making a few changes.
Give those dogs a rest
One of the key solutions is to alter the way you sit and lie down. Try to keep your feet elevated as much as possible to avoid cutting off circulation. You can place a foot stool or a stack of books underneath your desk at work to bring some relief. Furthermore, don't cross your legs or stand for long periods of time.
Kiss constricting clothes goodbye
Clothes that cinch tight around your body, especially at the waist or wrists, can cause fluid to get trapped. Stick to comfortable, loose garments and shoes (avoid high heels if possible). Investing in waist high maternity stockings can also alleviate swelling. This special type of hosiery distributes an even amount of pressure across the lower body.
Diet and exercise are key
Counterintuitive though it may seem, increasing your water consumption can actually help you retain less fluid. What you eat also has an effect - decrease your sodium and junk food intake. As always, regular exercise offers numerous benefits, including the reduction of swelling. However, try not to spend too much time outdoors in the sweltering summer heat, which can cause further discomfort.

Top 3 best movies about pregnancy
Top 3 best movies about pregnancy
Submitted on Mon, 01/16/2012 - 16:39Hollywood has generated several movies about pregnancy, and some of the most memorable tend to fall into the comedy category. Child-bearing can be an emotional roller coaster at times, making it even more beneficial to kick back and take a lighthearted, jovial view of the process. Here are a few of the top portrayals of those special nine months.
Juno
The witty and strong-willed Juno won over moviegoers in 2007, when the film racked up three Oscar nominations, including a win for Best Original Screenplay. To the film's advantage, the protagonist faces incredibly monumental milestones with a healthy sense of humor, avoiding the melodrama that could have so easily defined the story.
This modern classic is filled with punchy one-liners. When negotiating the terms of the adoption, Juno exclaims, "I mean, can't we just, like, kick this old school? Like, I have the baby, put it in a basket and send it your way, like, Moses and the reeds?"
Look Who's Talking
The title sequence of this charmer is one of the most memorable and recognizable cinematic scenes in recent history. The movie provides an inside perspective into the mind of the baby, who we first meet when he's still inside the womb, preparing for birth. The moment Mikey is born, the audience hears him plead, "Put me back in! Put me back in!"
Father of the Bride 2
After giving his daughter away in marriage in the first installment of this series, George Banks (played by Steve Martin) has to prepare for the arrival of his first grandchild and another child of his own when mother and daughter are pregnant at the same time. Banks also has to manage the overwhelming moment when both his wife and daughter go into labor at the same time.

Top 3 best actresses pregnant while filming a movie
Submitted on Mon, 01/16/2012 - 16:39While writers will occasionally write a pregnancy into the plot of a sitcom, movies don't offer the same flexibility. Thankfully, an impending visit from the stork doesn't have to get in the way of a great performance. The following women achieved some of the most memorable moments on screen, even while getting ready for a baby.
Marilyn Monroe. This dazzling starlet is known to have endured several rocky relationships, and one of the more difficult episodes came when she was pregnant during the filming of the 1959 hit Some Like It Hot, which earned her a Golden Globe for Best Actress. While married to third husband Arthur Miller, Monroe restarted an affair with co-star Tony Curtis. It is rumored that Monroe believed the child was Curtis'. Unfortunately, the actress eventually miscarried.
Helena Bonham Carter. After two years of trying, Carter was able to conceive her second child at the age of 41 without IVF. Just as she received the good news, she was preparing for her role as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, directed by her husband Tim Burton. Carter, a noted supporter of alternative medicine, told The Telegraph that she used Listening Therapy (which aims to expose the middle ear to different frequencies) to stay calm as she balanced work and pregnancy.
Jodie Foster. After Nicole Kidman was unable to play the lead role in David Fincher's Panic Room due to injury, Foster stepped in as a replacement. But just a few weeks into the project, she realized she was pregnant with her second child. The movie is full of intense, acrobatic fight scenes, and Foster had to wear a tank top for the majority of the shoot. This added a bit of pressure on the scheduling end, but being an expectant mother didn't hinder her performance one bit.

J.R. Martinez' first born child to be a girl
Submitted on Mon, 01/09/2012 - 15:13J.R. Martinez, the Iraq war veteran who stole hearts across America during his inspirational run on Dancing with the Stars, is expecting his first child with girlfriend Diana Gonzalez-Jones.
"I can't wait to show her everything," Martinez told People magazine. "I want to get her into sports and I want her to know she can do anything and be anything she wants to be."
The 28-year-old told US Weekly that his daughter could possibly get lessons from his DWTS partner Karina Smirnoff some day. The father-to-be wanted to keep his girlfriend's pregnancy private until after the show completed - which ended with a joyous victory for Martinez. He's excited to welcome another girl into his life, noting that being raised by a single-mother has helped him become sensitive to women.
In 2003, Martinez suffered severe burns to 40 percent of his body while serving in Iraq at the age of 19. While spending 34 months in recovery, he began meeting other burn victims and emerged as an inspirational speaker. He took a role on daytime soap All My Children in 2008 where he met staff member Gonzalez-Jones.
After winning DWTS and recieving numerous other honors, including the opportunity to be grand marshal of the Tournament of Roses Parade, the couple jokingly wondered how 2012 could top 2011 - but now that they are expecting a baby, they know the answer. Martinez said he wants to pass down all the wisdom that was given to him and is "over the moon" to have received the best holiday gift possible.
"Diana has a little baby bump now and it’s the cutest thing ever," Martinez told People magazine. "With the holidays coming up, this is the biggest and best gift we could get."

Submitted on Fri, 01/06/2012 - 08:26Brazilian model Alessandra Ambrosio managed to keep her pregnancy a secret throughout most of the first trimester, even walking in the Victoria's Secret Fashion show proudly baring her belly without anyone noticing that she was expecting.
Ambrosio and fiance Jamie Mazur already have a 3-year-old daughter Anja Louise, who is seen touching her mom's subtle baby bump at the beach in a photo released by the leggy lady. The picture was snapped in her hometown Florianopolis, Brazil. The 30-year-old model announced the pregnancy on Facebook in an English and Portuguese post.
"Anja, Jamie and I are overjoyed and extremely appreciative of all the wonderful wishes we've received!!" she gushed. "Anja has filled our lives with love and we can't wait to welcome the new baby into the family this spring!!"
The glowing expectant mom considered pulling out of her commitment to walk the Victoria's Secret show, but decided to hit the runway wearing bejeweled lingerie without any mention of her pregnancy. Ambrosio has participated in shows for the legendary international brand since 2000.
As a working mother, the Brazilian beauty told People magazine that having a schedule and the support of others is key to managing her myriad responsibilities. During the interview, which occurred in the spring, she confirmed that she "definitely" had plans to expand her family.
Ambrosio and Mazur, a Californian businessman, have been dating since 2005. With baby number two on the way, Mazur may need to improve his Portuguese!
