Why you should cave to your cravings

August 05, 2011 12:00 AM by

You've spent most of your adult life staving off the desire for a cookie or a fried chicken leg in order to keep your fit figure, but now that you're pregnant, it's time to let go. Some experts suggest that giving in to your pregnancy cravings, no matter how fattening or weird they may be, is often the best thing you can do for you and your baby, and here's why.

Pregnancy is an incredible and natural process, and it's important to listen to what your body is telling you during this time. If you're craving peanut butter or salami, it might be because the baby needs sodium. If you want an enormous meatball sub, maybe the little guy needs some protein or iron. Your body knows what's up, so let it tell you what to do.

Of course, just because you give in to that urge for a slice of cake doesn't mean you need to sit down and eat the entire thing! Plus, if all your baby seems to want is junk food, remember that you need to be eating plenty of fruits and veggies too if you want him to grow up big and strong.

Some women have bizarre pregnancy cravings for items that aren't really edible, like chalk, dirt or clay. This is a medical condition called pica, and if you experience it, it's important to talk to your doctor.

Other than that, enjoy your pickles and ice cream – this might be the only time you can do so without the world judging you!
