Bowel movement during labor?

Is it true that people can have a BM during labor?

This is one of the most common qestions women ask their physicians. Patients want to know if we still give enemas at the hospital. I inform patients that many practitioners no longer give enemas before labor. Many patients have a BM during labor because the same muscles that allow you to have a BM are those that are being stimulated during birth. I tell patients that it is normal and yes your doctor is used to it. Once patients hear that it is rather common, they feel less distressed about the issue.
