Safe to start a family at 41 years old?

Q: At 41, should I be afraid to start a family?

A: Women are waiting longer to have babies. The trend has lead to women getting their careers established before starting a family. The magic age thrown around in society is 40. As a doctor I can tell you –  40 is not too old to have a baby. The risk of diabetes and high blood pressure slightly increases with age. A woman can help decrease these risks by gaining an appropriate amount of weight, eating healthy, and exercising during her pregnancy. The risk of chromosomal abnormalities is around 1%, which means 99% of the time all is well. Women do not have to shut the door on motherhood at 40.
