Do pregnant women really glow?

Do pregnant women really glow during a pregnancy?

Whether you’re planning for pregnancy in the future or you’re a first time mom, there’s no denying that there are some pretty weird tidbits of information that you might hear about pregnant women. With so many myths out there, it’s hard to tell which “facts” are really fiction. For example, have you ever heard people say that pregnant women glow? Before you start picturing glow-in-the-dark moms-to-be, we’re just talking about that fresh, dewy appearance that most celebrities are known for on the red carpet. So is this actually true?

In short, yes
During a pregnancy, hormones are running haywire throughout your body, causing all kinds of changes. This includes increasing oil production in your skin, translating – for some women – to softer, smoother and more moisturized skin. Your body also increases its blood volume during pregnancy – by a whole 50 percent. This means that there’s more blood circulating closer to the surface of your skin, which can make your skin look brighter and slightly flushed. Both of these effects can result in that bright, dewy look that people refer to when they say glow.

Not everyone benefits
While some women experience the above-mentioned oil increase with no issues, others don’t get off so easy. Increased oil production can lead to acne in some women – especially around the mouth and chin. Some acne treatment products and medications are safe for women to take during pregnancy, but others aren’t, so if you experience breakouts, talk to your doctor about what’s safe to use.

In the meantime, you may need to change your skincare regimen to accommodate your new skin type. Opt for a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser to use twice a day, and switch some of your products to versions that are meant for oily skin. Moisturizer, foundation and finishing powder made for oily skin can help reduce oil production and make your skin appear less shiny.

Attitude plays a role, too
Regardless of what your skin’s up to, some people think that a pregnant woman’s attitude can also contribute to her perceived glow. All that excitement about getting ready for baby can put a smile on your face and an extra spring in your step, which might make people perceive you as happier, brighter and “glowing.”

Even if you don’t think you see much of a difference in the mirror, chances are people will comment on your radiance at some point during your pregnancy!
