Three exercises to avoid while pregnant

Doctors and experts agree that getting mild to moderate exercise while pregnant is healthy for both mom and baby. But is there anything you should make sure to avoid to keep your unborn baby safe? Here are a few exercises, sports and hobbies that the pros don’t recommend for women who are expecting.

Horseback riding

It’s not so much that the action of riding a horse is dangerous – it’s more that horses are living creatures, which makes them unpredictable. If a horse should buck or kick unexpected, you could get thrown – and a long fall or hard impact could be disastrous for both mom and baby.

Scuba diving

Scuba diving is dangerous even under ideal conditions, and it’s especially risky for women who are expecting! The rapid changes in pressure can cause miscarriage and even pre-term labor, so stick to snorkeling while you’re pregnant.

Weight training

Working out with heavy weights can decrease the amount of blood flow to the uterus and kidneys, meaning your baby won’t be getting as much oxygen. So skip the heavy weights next time you’re in the gym and try a brisk walk on the treadmill or elliptical instead.

So what can you do while pregnant? The experts recommend low-impact activities like walking, stationary biking, swimming, and simple stretches. If you routinely did rigorous exercises prior to becoming pregnant, talk with your health care provider about continuing on with your workout regimen.
