What to expect in the second trimester

Most ladies know what to expect at the beginning of their pregnancies – nausea, fatigue, a constantly full bladder and sore breasts are some of the most common early signs of pregnancy, and anyone who's ever suspected they might be in a family way probably knows what these symptoms mean. Plus, most gals realize that the end of pregnancy is full of sore feet, achy backs, swollen ankles and cravings for ice cream and pickles. But what should you expect in between?

The second trimester of pregnancy is often called the "honeymoon period," and with good reason. Typically, this is the time when morning sickness and breast tenderness subside, so you can focus more completely on the joy of your coming baby. You might feel winded or tired, but you're probably not about to experience the complete exhaustion of your early pregnancy. Plus, since your belly is finally starting to show, you can get out of those jeans and into some seriously comfortable maternity clothes.

Many women experience "quickening" – the baby's first movements – in the second trimester. You might feel Junior kicking, twirling or even having the hiccups during this period, a magical moment for any mom-to-be.

Enjoy the second trimester while you can – before you know, you'll be holding your little one in your arms, rather than in your tummy.
