How to survive the third trimester of pregnancy

Feel better during your last weeks of pregnancy with these simple comfort measures.

If there's one thing to rival the discomfort of the first trimester, it's the final stretch of pregnancy. The fatigue is back, you can't see your feet – and even your maternity clothes feel snug. But before you throw in the towel and hibernate until delivery day, think about adding in one of these comfort measures:

Massage

There's no better time to indulge in a professional massage than during the final weeks of pregnancy. Do your research and find a practice that specializes in prenatal treatments. Many will have a table specifically designed to cradle an expectant mom's bump – giving you that glorious feeling of finally laying on your belly again. Talk to your massage therapist about what's deemed safe during the third trimester. You may determine to skip a foot massage, as certain pressure points are thought to bring on contractions.

Swim

Let's face it, it's been a long while since you've felt weightless. While slipping into a swimsuit may be the last thing you want to do, floating effortlessly in a pool will be well worth it. Check with your local park districts for neighborhood pools you can frequent for free.

Meditate

With baby's delivery day just weeks away, you may find your stress levels through the roof. Feeling anxious is no fun and may be harmful for your little one. Take a chill pill by focusing on being mindful for a few minutes each day. Shut out your fears about labor, your to-do list and your aches and pain. For five minutes each day, turn inward and give your body a dose of peace and calm.

Gentle movement

The last thing you want to hear anyone say right now is "treadmill," right? There's no need to ramp up your exercise routine when you're already feeling uncomfortable. But by committing to slow, gentle walks – or a few low impact yoga moves, you may find you ease some of your pregnancy aches and pains. Forcing yourself to move more throughout the day may give you more energy and help ward off pregnancy insomnia too.

Get it done

There's nothing more anxiety-producing than a looming and lengthy to-do list. Take some pressure off yourself by tackling some of those projects you've been putting off. Organize the nursery, create a budget, pack your hospital bag or install the car seat – whatever helps you feel like you have one more thing to do.
