What you really can’t eat during pregnancy

It can sometimes feel as though your pregnancy is just one big list of "don't"s – no unpasteurized cheese, no caffeine, no wine, no deli meats … is there anything you can still enjoy? We're here to provide you with a handy guide on what foods to avoid during pregnancy, and which ones are A-OK.

It goes without saying, but alcohol is a no-no. Researchers have not yet concluded how much – if any – alcohol is safe to consume during pregnancy, so doctors recommend that pregnant women just avoid the stuff at all costs. If you weren't planning on conceiving and had a few beers before you found out you were pregnant, your baby will probably be fine. However, once you're sure that you're in a family way, swearing off of booze is best for both you and your unborn child.

Seafood is another thing to avoid while you're with child. Some of the ocean's bounty – like swordfish, tilefish, king mackerel and even shark – can be very high in mercury, which could do damage to the fetus. You should also avoid sushi and other raw meats, which can carry disease.

Soft, unpasteurized cheese is also off limits while you're pregnant. No Brie, Camembert, feta, blue cheese or queso fresca! You can enjoy all the cheddar you'd like, however.

This is only a partial list of foods to avoid while pregnant. To keep you and your baby healthy throughout your pregnancy, your best bet is to munch on as many whole, healthy snacks as you can, like fresh produce and lean meats that have been thoroughly cooked.
