Should you learn your baby’s sex?

by Pregnancy Contributor Leave a Comment

Should you learn the sex of your unborn baby? Many couples simply can't wait to find out if little Junior will be a boy or a girl. Some will beg the ultrasound technician to spill the beans long before the sonogram can indicate either way. Others like the element of surprise, and want to wait until the delivery room to reveal the surprise. Here are some pros and cons to help you decide which is right for you.

If you learn the sex of your baby, you have more time to acclimate to the idea of having a son or daughter. If you've always longed for a specific gender – for instance, if you're dying to add a daughter to a family of three boys – we recommend learning your baby's sex. That way, you won't feel a twinge of disappointment, however fleeting, if you discover in the delivery room that you're going to have yet another son.

Of course, lots of couples love the excitement and mystery of waiting to discover the sex. The guesswork can be fun, and you might enjoy indulging yourself in all sorts of silly old wives' tales to see if you can figure it out on your own. No matter what you choose, the end result is the same – pure joy!
